Interested in Attending as a Camper or Peer Model?
Interested Campers between the ages of eight and eighteen may apply.

When will this overnight camp take place?

Younger campers, ages eight and nine will attend Wednesday, July 30th through Friday, August 1st
while campers ages ten through eighteen will stay an additional day (Wednesday, July 30th through Saturday, August 2nd).

Where will Camp Encourage be held?

Camp Encourage will be held at Tall Oaks Conference Center, a beautiful camp facility forty-five minutes west of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Who should apply?
For our initial year of Camp Encourage 2008 and because we are starting small for purposes of ensuring quality, we will be targeting individuals on the autism spectrum that are independent with toileting, dressing, and showering needs and are successful with a 2:1 child / adult ratio (not presently exhibiting intensive behavioral or functional needs that would require the constant support of 1:1 assistance).

How will the selection process work?
First to meet the needs of our immediate community, priority will be given to all campers that reside in Missouri and Kansas.  All Interest Forms from these two states with the required postmark date will be placed in a lottery pool.  If slots remain open, another lottery will take place with interested campers from outside states.

How much does Camp Encourage cost?
The fee for participating in Camp Encourage is $600 for the eight and nine year olds and $800 for those ages ten through eighteen.  This fee is very near the actual cost per camper due to the amount of quality planning, specialized materials and supports, cost of meals, expense of comfortable cabins, and participation in tailored activities.

Please do not let the cost deter you from applying.  We are working diligently to make this opportunity available to a variety of campers, despite socioeconomic differences or difficulties through scholarship funding. Please see the Camper Interest Form below for further details.

When does the following form need to be submitted?
Completed Interest Forms received with a postmark date not later than April 1 will be considered within the first pool of applicants. Forms received following this deadline will likely be placed on a waiting list unless available slots remain.

For the 2008 session, campers and peers have already been selected.  We were delighted to see such a vast interest yet sadly have over twenty campers presently on a waiting list (in case cancellations take place).  If you are interested in Camp Encourage for next year, please be sure to contact us and let us know and we will ensure that you are on our database.  For those of you attending, we sincerely look forward to meeting each of you and sharing a fun-filled week!  For additional details about what might occur at camp, click here for a story that will assist in preparing your camper for the adventure!

Peer Models
have an extremely important role at Camp Encourage.  Not only do they enhance the lives of other children, they also walk away with new perspectives, enjoyable stories, new friends, and lifelong memories.

Who can apply?
Any females or males between the age of eight and eighteen may apply.    Peer Models participate in Camp Encourage like all other campers.  Peer Models will reside in the cabins overnight with the other campers with autism spectrum disorders, will participate in all camp activities, and will be expected to serve as role models for the campers with special needs.  Because Camp Encourage targets social and behavioral deficits often paired with autism spectrum disorders, peers selected need to demonstrate developmentally appropriate social and behavioral skills.  Further, Peer Models must possess patience and kindness and must demonstrate acceptance and be understanding of differences.  Please understand that older Peer Models will NOT be incorporated as “Junior Counselors.” All Peer Models are to interact with the campers, enhancing each child’s experience at camp and are NOT to isolate themselves from the campers with autism spectrum disorders.  Should you have ANY questions regarding this role, please contact Camp Encourage prior to applying to clarify your questions and/or concerns.

How much does it cost to attend camp as a Peer Model?
The fee for participating in Camp Encourage is $300 for the eight and nine year olds and $400 for those ages ten through eighteen.  The fee covers the cost of preparation, training, activities, meals, and lodging.
